Yesterday we were in beautiful Regensburg to watch the first Ironman there. Lots of friends and sports colleagues were at the start, and cheering them on was something we didn't want to be missed. The weather god was kind to all athletes and shone down on us with sunny weather at 25 degrees.
The course of the race in and of itself everyone has probably already heard. After Faris and Andi Böcherer had to stick with their teammate Christoph Wandratsch's swimming at the beginning, Andi was by far the first to enter the second transition area. Followed by Faris, who couldn't significantly shorten the gap to the leader on the first two laps. After that nobody came for a long time, I think we waited over a quarter of an hour for the pursuers, who were able to make up ground again towards the end of the race, for Andi Böcherer, who was slowing down and who crossed the finish line in second behind Faris could save. With the women there was at no time any doubt that Sonja Tajsich would go home against a rather weak competition.
Andi Böcherer is still in the lead ... and yes, we were in the same spot the whole time, as you can see on the background 😉
Impressions of the race from the spectator's point of view
The big highlights of the race are, of course, the final marathon through the historic and world-famous Regensburg old town and the really beautiful bike course over two laps, including past Walhalla.
Unfortunately, I can't say more about the bike course, and here we come to the disadvantages: it is extremely difficult for spectators to get from swimming to good spots on the bike course! If we hadn't sometimes simply defied the instructions of the stewards, we would probably never have reached the first ascent in Donaustafen. So here the organizer has to think about something, a second "solar mountain" is of course completely impossible. Probably all the stewards had received strict instructions, but this sometimes drifted into the ridiculous, when I ran 3 meters next to my athlete on the running track and hit him, two security officers jumped up to pull me off the street 😉
Besides these little things, it was a successful premiere !!
nice week!
